Terms of Service

[Last updated: April 2026]

Welcome to DNB Stories Africa. These Terms of Service (“Terms”, “Terms of Use”) govern your access to and use of the DNB Stories Africa website, related pages, newsletters, forms, community features, reader-revenue tools, and any related services made available through the site (collectively, the “Service”).

Daniel Nkado operates DNB Stories Africa, trading as DNB Stories Africa.

When you access or use the Service, you accept these Terms and agree to follow them. If you do not agree to these Terms, you must not use the Service.

1. Eligibility and Age Restriction

We offer the Service only to users aged 18 and over. By accessing or using the Service, you represent that you are at least 18 years old and legally capable of entering into a binding agreement.

Some content on the Service may contain mature themes, strong language, sexual content, or emotionally sensitive material intended only for adults.

2. Intellectual Property

Unless otherwise stated, DNB Stories Africa owns or holds licences to the Service and its original content, features, functionality, branding, design, editorial materials, graphics, and text. Applicable intellectual property laws protect these materials.

You may read, view, and share links to content from the Service for personal, non-commercial use, provided that you do not:

  • modify, republish, reproduce, sell, license, or commercially exploit our content without express written permission
  • remove copyright, authorship, trademark, or attribution notices
  • create misleading derivative works from our content
  • present our content as your own

For stories, essays, articles, or other original materials submitted by guest writers, copyright remains with the original author unless otherwise agreed in writing. However, by submitting content to DNB Stories Africa, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to review, edit, reproduce, publish, distribute, display, promote, archive, and share that material on our platform, newsletters, and related social media channels.

3. User Conduct and Community Guidelines

DNB Stories Africa is a platform for editorial, educational, cultural, and community-centred expression, including content relevant to LGBTQ+ readers and writers.

To maintain a safer environment, users must not engage in the following conduct:

  • hate speech, threats, or content promoting violence or hatred against individuals or groups
  • harassment, bullying, intimidation, stalking, or doxxing
  • spam, unauthorised advertising, misleading promotions, or malicious links
  • impersonation or misrepresentation of identity or affiliation
  • unlawful, defamatory, fraudulent, abusive, or privacy-violating conduct
  • attempts to interfere with the security, stability, or proper functioning of the Service

We may remove content, restrict features, suspend access, or terminate use of the Service if we reasonably believe a user has breached these Terms or if legal, safety, or operational risks arise.

4. User Submissions and Editorial Rights

If you submit comments, messages, stories, pitches, essays, testimonies, or other materials to us, you confirm that you have the right to submit them and that they do not knowingly violate the rights of any person or entity.

We may edit submissions for clarity, formatting, style, grammar, length, legal risk, safety, or editorial consistency.

Submission does not guarantee publication.

5. Content Disclaimers

The Service contains editorial, opinion-based, educational, analytical, literary, and community content.

Important disclaimers:

  • Views expressed: Views expressed in opinion pieces, op-eds, personal stories, interviews, or guest-written content are those of the relevant authors and do not necessarily reflect the official position of DNB Stories Africa.
  • Information only: Content relating to mental health, sexual health, relationships, law, migration, or similar matters is provided for general information and public education only. It is not a substitute for professional medical, therapeutic, legal, financial, or other specialist advice.
  • Fiction: Characters and events in fiction or literary sections may be fictional, stylised, composite, or imaginatively constructed. Any resemblance to actual persons or events may be coincidental unless expressly stated otherwise.
  • No guaranteed outcomes: We do not guarantee that any article, framework, analysis, or published perspective will be appropriate to your circumstances or produce a specific result.

6. Reader Registration, Subscriptions, Memberships, and Contributions

We may offer reader registration, newsletter sign-ups, paid subscriptions, memberships, registered-reader access, and one-time or recurring voluntary contributions through Google Reader Revenue Manager, Subscribe with Google, Google-powered payment tools, or other service providers we may use from time to time.

Unless expressly stated otherwise:

  • subscriptions are paid access products that may renew automatically
  • memberships may refer to subscriber or registered-reader access arrangements offered through the Service
  • contributions or reader support payments are voluntary, one-time or recurring payments made to support the Service, and may or may not provide access benefits depending on the offer presented at the time

By registering for or purchasing one of these features, you agree to provide accurate information and to keep any required details reasonably up to date.

7. Payments, Billing, Renewal, and Taxes

We display charges at the point of purchase when the Service offers paid products or voluntary contributions.

By completing a paid transaction, you authorise the applicable payment provider to charge the amount shown, together with any applicable taxes, VAT, or similar charges.

If we offer a subscription or recurring contribution on an automatically renewing basis, it will continue to renew for the applicable billing period unless the user cancels it before the next renewal date, subject to the terms shown at checkout and any applicable law.

We may change pricing, contribution options, subscription plans, or available benefits prospectively. Any such changes will not affect amounts already paid for the current billing period unless clearly disclosed and applied in a lawful manner.

If you use Google-powered reader-revenue or payment tools through the Service, additional Google payment terms may apply: https://payments.google.com/termsOfService

8. Cancellation, Refunds, and Termination of Paid Access

If you have a recurring subscription or membership and you cancel it, future recurring charges should stop, while your paid access will ordinarily continue until the end of the current paid billing period unless a refund, charge reversal, termination for cause, or applicable law provides otherwise.

If we issue a refund for a contribution or subscription billing period, we may end access immediately if we also terminate the associated membership or paid entitlement.

We handle refund requests through the relevant provider, checkout flow, or publisher tools, depending on how the user completed the transaction.

Unless otherwise stated at the point of purchase or required by law:

  • one-time voluntary contributions are generally non-refundable
  • recurring subscriptions may be cancelled to stop future billing
  • refunds may be granted in cases such as duplicate charges, technical error, fraud concerns, or where required by law

Nothing in these Terms limits any mandatory cancellation, refund, or consumer rights that apply to you under applicable law.

9. Failed Payments, Chargebacks, and Access Suspension

We may suspend, restrict, or terminate access to paid or registered features if:

  • a payment fails or is reversed
  • a chargeback or fraudulent transaction is reported
  • registration information is materially inaccurate
  • access is used in breach of these Terms
  • suspension is reasonably necessary for legal, security, operational, or abuse-prevention reasons

Where appropriate, we may restore access once the relevant issue has been resolved.

10. Third-Party Links and Services

Our Service may contain links to third-party websites, platforms, advertisers, affiliate partners, payment services, embedded media, or external tools that are not owned or controlled by DNB Stories Africa.

We have no control over, and assume no responsibility for, the content, availability, privacy policies, terms, products, or practices of any third-party websites or services.

You acknowledge and agree that DNB Stories Africa shall not be responsible or liable, directly or indirectly, for any loss or damage caused by or in connection with your use of any such third-party content, goods, or services.

11. Privacy

Your use of the Service is also subject to our Privacy Policy, which explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect personal data.

12. Availability of the Service

We aim to keep the Service available and functioning properly, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted, secure, or error-free access at all times.

We may suspend, withdraw, discontinue, or modify all or part of the Service for maintenance, editorial, operational, legal, technical, business, or security reasons.

13. Disclaimer of Warranties

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Service is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis.

We make no warranty or representation that:

  • the Service will always be available, secure, and free from errors
  • content will always be complete, accurate, current, or suitable for every purpose
  • the Service will be free from viruses or harmful components
  • defects will always be corrected immediately

Nothing in these Terms excludes warranties that cannot lawfully be excluded.

14. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, DNB Stories Africa, Daniel Nkado, and any associated contributors, contractors, agents, suppliers, or service providers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive loss or damage, including loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, opportunity, or anticipated savings, arising out of or related to:

  • your access to, use of, or inability to use the Service
  • reliance on content made available through the Service
  • any conduct or content of third parties
  • unauthorised access to or alteration of your transmissions or data
  • interruption, suspension, withdrawal, or modification of the Service

These Terms do not exclude or limit liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that the law does not permit us to exclude or limit.

15. Governing Law and Consumer Rights

The laws of England and Wales govern these Terms and guide their interpretation. Mandatory consumer protection laws in the user’s country of residence continue to apply where they cannot be lawfully excluded.

The parties may bring disputes arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Service before a court of competent jurisdiction, subject to any non-excludable rights the user has under applicable law.

16. Severability and Waiver

If a court or other authority finds any provision of these Terms invalid, unlawful, or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will remain in full force and effect.

Our failure to enforce any right or provision of these Terms does not waive that right.

17. Changes to These Terms

We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to modify or replace these Terms at any time to reflect legal, editorial, operational, technical, or business changes.

When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. By continuing to access or use the Service after those changes become effective, you agree to be bound by the revised Terms.
