‘It’s deeply concerning’ – Twitter reacts to suspension in Nigeria

Twitter has reacted to the suspension of its operations in Nigeria, describing the situation as “deeply concerning”.

Twitter’s Senior Policy Communications Manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, Sarah Hart, wrote in an email response sent to The Cable:

“The announcement made by the Nigerian Government that they have suspended Twitter’s operations in Nigeria is deeply concerning. We’re investigating and will provide updates when we know more”.

Nigeria’s Information and Culture Minister, Lai Mohammed announced the suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria on Friday, June 4.

While it is not yet clear how the government plans to enforce the ban, Lai Mohammed cited the “persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence” as reason for the suspension.
