I was hired to work as a doorman at an exclusive hotel in Budapest – the capital and most populous city in Hungary.
I was 19 at the time and ready to work any job to make some money.
On my first day at work, I was given a nice uniform that included a nice hat and a nice dark blue suit and I was happy to greet guests, helping them in and out of their cars, holding the door for them and taking their bags to their rooms.

After about three hours, a manager came to me and told me to go to the back and clean out a few trash bins.
They were filled with kitchen trash like rotten veggies and stinky raw meat.
He pointed me towards the hose and some chemicals to disinfect after I was done.
I was halfway through the cleaning, sweating heavily and stinking like trash as some dirty trash water had splashed back on my uniform.
I kept cleaning to finish up what I started, and by the time I was done, I was sweating like a pig and probably smelling like one too.

After all the trash bins were clean, I went to see my manager and asked him for another uniform and a 5-minute break to change because I did not really look presentable and I did not want to get complaints from guests about my cleanliness.
To my surprise, the manager told me to just go back to the front door and start working.
“Are you sure?” I asked. “Because I don’t feel like I look and smell up to the standards of this 5-star hotel.”
“Since I am your boss, you do whatever I say!” came the fast reply.
At this point not only did I feel that I looked and smelled like a pig, but I could project I was going to be treated like one too by this manager guy.
I made a split-second decision and looked at him and said:
“You are not my boss anymore!”
His eyes ran up to me.
“I quit!”
And that was how I quit and left the job.
I believe in treating people right regardless of your position and theirs.
I knew right there that this place was run by old-school mentality men who preferred to run it like an Eastern European army where on purpose they humiliate lower ranked employees just to show them who the boss is.
I did not like it and I know that I made the right decision to quit that day.
