A woman who said her son was one of those that died at the Lekki Toll Gate shooting on October 20 when soldiers opened fire on unarmed protesters has spoken up.
The woman said she is the mother of Anthony Okechukwu, one of the protesters who reportedly died during the shooting.
The alleged mother of Anthony said she found out about her son’s death online when she saw his photo being circulated. She explained that she called her other son who is in Russia and he confirmed to her that her son Mmazuo Anthony Okechukwu died from gunshot wounds.
Anthony Okechukwu, 23, reportedly suffered a fatal gunshot wound when soldiers opened fire on unarmed protesters camping at the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos.
The October 20 incident had shaken the nation and ignited what’s probably one of the biggest incidences of violence Nigeria has witnessed in recent times.
The alleged mother of Anthony said:
“First of all, I want to thank his friends who picked him up from when he was shot. If it wasn’t for his friends, maybe the soldiers who picked up the other corpses would have picked him up and say nobody died. Those children saw when Anthony was running with gunshot wounds, they stayed with him.”
Anthony’s mother criticized the Nigerian government for denying no one died from the shooting.
She said:
“I cannot fathom what happened. A lot of our children, a lot of our youths, killed. And you lot have the effrontery to come out and look everybody, the whole world, to say nobody died. May death befall all of you.”
The woman said her son’s body has been taken to a mortuary in Lagos.
