Tanzanian President John Magufuli has died.

The news of John Magufuli’s death was announced by Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan in a state broadcast on Wednesday, March 17.

The Vice President said John Magufuli died of heart failure but Magufuli’s main political rival, Tundu Lissu, has alleged that the president was suffering from COVID-19.

Magufuli had not been seen in public since the end of February.

John Magufuli was a prominent denier of COVID-19 before his death. In a 2020 speech, the president said that Tanzania had eradicated the disease through three days of national prayer.
