The Mangione family owns Lorien Health Services, a nursing home chain in Maryland, United States. According to Luigi’s LinkedIn account, the 26-year-old volunteered at Lorien Health Services in 2014. Well known for their philanthropic nature, Luigi Mangione’s rich grandfather donated over $1 million to the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, where his 37 grandchildren were born. For this reason, the medical center named its obstetrics unit after the family. Luigi’s family also owns local resorts, country clubs, and a radio station. In 1978, the family acquired the Turf Valley Country Club and built it into a full-service spa and a conference center, also known as Turf Valley Resort.

The wealthy Mangione family built the Hayfields Country Club in 1986. The club operates as a golf and wedding venue. Luigi’s family also has a foundation known as “The Mangione Family Foundation.” Through this foundation, they have donated large amounts of money to healthcare centers like the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the St. Joseph Medical Center.

Luigi Mangione’s mother Kathleen Zannino Mangione comes from a prominent Italian-American family. According to information gathered by DNB Stories Africa, Kathleen is the daughter of Joseph N. Zannino Jr., who founded a funeral home in the Italian Community in East Baltimore. However, Kathleen currently runs a boutique travel company.

In December 2024, Kathleen came into the spotlight because of Luigi’s alleged involvement in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. According to reports, Luigi Mangione’s mother had filed a missing person’s report about her son on November 18, 2024. She also spoke with the FBI two days before Luigi’s arrest, where she reportedly admitted that shooting the UnitedHealthcare CEO was “something that she could see him (Luigi) doing”.

Luigi’s older sister Lucia has been married to her husband, Paul Giulio, since June 2022.

Luigi Mangione’s cousin, Antonino Mangione, popularly known as Nino Mangione, is an American politician and a member of the Maryland House of Delegates. Nino was born on April 1, 1987, in Baltimore County, Maryland. He is 37 years old as of January 2025. 

Following Luigi Mangione’s arrest, Nino released a statement on behalf of the Mangione family, expressing their “shock and devastation” at the reports. Nino also postponed a campaign fundraising event scheduled to take place at Hayfields Country Club, owned by the Mangione family.

About Luigi Mangione’s arrest and charges

Luigi Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s restaurant in Pennsylvania on December 9, 2024, for the alleged murder of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare Group. Brian was shot to death on December 4, 2024, outside an entrance to the New York Hilton Midtown. The CEO was in the city to attend an annual investors’ meeting. Meanwhile, months before Brian Thompson’s death, Luigi disappeared for months, and his family and friends couldn’t contact him. In fact, Luigi Mangione’s mother filed a missing person’s report about her son on November 18, 2024, in San Francisco. She filed the report 16 days before Brian Thompson’s murder. 

At the time of Luigi Mangione’s arrest, he was found with a 3D-printed gun, fake IDs, and cash. The police also found a 262-word handwritten document about the American healthcare system. On December 9, 2024, Luigi was arraigned on two felony charges of forgery and carrying a firearm without a license. He was also charged with three misdemeanor charges of tampering with records or identification, possessing instruments of crime, and providing false identification to the authorities.

Following Luigi’s arrest, he has received a lot of support online, with some calling him a folk hero. The public’s negative views of the health insurance industry and its claim denial practices explain the support Luigi has received. Although it is unclear whether Luigi Mangione had an awful experience with the health insurance industry, he reportedly struggled with pain from a spinal condition. According to posts on a Reddit account, Luigi underwent a spinal fusion surgery in July 2023.

Luigi Mangione is currently facing four federal charges for the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Update on Luigi Mangione’s case

Luigi Mangione appeared in the New York Supreme Court on December 23, 2024, and pleaded not guilty to the state charges against him. He is currently facing 11 state charges and 4 federal charges. These include serious offenses such as first-degree murder, terrorism-related murder, illegal weapon possession, and stalking. If convicted of the federal murder charge, Mangione could face the death penalty.

Luigi Mangione’s lawyer, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, has criticized the prosecution and New York City Mayor Eric Adams, accusing them of violating her client’s right to a fair trial. Notably, Luigi’s lawyer is married to Marc Agnifilo, a lawyer representing Sean “Diddy” Combs in his sex trafficking charges.
