Ibrahim Traoré is a Burkinabé soldier and politician. He is currently serving as the interim President of Burkina Faso after ousting the former interim President, Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, in 2022.

Ibrahim Traoré was born on March 14, 1988, in Kéra, Bondokuy, Burkina Faso. As of the time of publishing this article (August 2025), Ibrahim Traoré is 37 years old. He is currently the second youngest head of state in the world.

He then attended a high school in Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso. Ibrahim Traoré went on to study geology at the University of Ouagadougou, graduating with honors. After his university education, Ibrahim Traoré attended the Georges-Namoano Military Academy.

How Ibrahim Traoré started his career

In 2009, Ibrahim Traoré joined the Army of Burkina Faso. After his education at the Georges-Namoano Military Academy, he went to Morocco for anti-aircraft training. Ibrahim slowly moved up the ranks and was promoted to lieutenant in 2014. He then joined MINUSMA, a United Nations peacekeeping force during the Mali War.

Afterwards, Traoré returned to Burkina Faso, assisting in efforts to curb the growing jihadist insurgency. In 2020, Ibrahim Traoré was promoted to Captain. He was a part of the army officers who supported the January 2022 Burkina Faso coup d’état that put the junta leader Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba in power. However, Traoré and other army officers became dissatisfied with Paul-Henri’s inability to contain the jihadists’ insurgency. They carried out another coup in September 2022, which led to the overthrow of Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba. 

Following the successful takeover, Traoré was named the leader of the Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration. He also assumed the role of Interim President, holding the title of “Head of State, Supreme Head of the Armed Forces.” Since then, Ibrahim Traoré has been hailed by many citizens and pan-Africanists as a symbol of youthful leadership and resistance against foreign influence. His bold stance against terrorism and neocolonialism has earned him widespread support across parts of West Africa.
