Who is Cheque?

Cheque is a Nigerian singer and rapper currently signed to Phyno’s Penthauze Records. Cheque is better known as Super Boy Cheque by his fans. His full name is Akanbi Bamidele Brett. Cheque gained more media attention with his 2020 single – Zoom – which has topped several music charts.

Cheque’s childhood and education

Cheque was born and raised in Ondo State. He also had most of his early education there. Cheque is a graduate of Chemical Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University in Osun State. According to Cheque, he never envisioned becoming a music artist looking into his background where education is very compulsory.

Cheque’s music career

He started his music career in 2015 while still in the university. He got signed to Penthauze Records on February 2019 after he was discovered by Phyno through one of his Instagram freestyling sessions. Prior to his affiliation with Penthauze Records, Cheques’ stage name was Kyle-B. Cheque’s first hit song was “Nyem Space” which was released in March 2019. Shortly after, he released three singles under his label – Jekasoro, Pain Away and Abundance – on June 2019.

On July 2020, the talented artiste premiered a project titled, ‘Razor EP’, a compilation with 5-track hits which includes “Zoom”, “Loco”, “Satisfied”, “Hollywood” and “Odun”. The EP rose to Top 5 Nigerian albums on iTunes, within 24 hours of its release. Cheque was also featured in Olamide’s 2020 album “999 alongside Rhatti, Phyno, Snow on a track that was titled “Warlords”.

Cheque said he started music to suppress boredom. Prior to his breakout in the industry, Cheque and Fireboy DML were really close friends. They were then signed to a record label called Cruel Station and their record contract involved free accommodation.

However, the contract expired in the final months of 2017. DML and Cheque had to move in with a friend who owned a recording facility for a while until each of them got signed into different record labels.

Cheque has also been friends with other Nigerian musicians Chinko Ekun, Gbasky, Zamorra, and Blaqbonez, since their university days.

On choosing the stage name Cheque

The music artist revealed that the name “Cheque” was inspired by his incessant usage of the word and was the only stage name that he has ever given himself.

Cheque says he is inspired by such singers as Ycee, Drake, Rick Ross, Eminem and Justin Bieber.

Cheque’s style of music shares a semblance to that of Rema’s, though with a different sonic twist and softer tone.

Cheque as a first-class student

Unlike what most people think of entertainers, Cheque is quite brilliant. There are reports that he was a first-class student during the first two years as an undergraduate before he found his calling in music.
