Award-winning Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo and Nigeria’s Jimmy Odukoya have joined the cast of upcoming historical epic drama The Woman King, alongside Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Adrienne Warren and John Boyega.
Four-time Grammy Award winner Angelique Kidjo has appeared in a number of successful movies including “The CEO” and “Mother of George”. Jimmy Odukoya is a Nigerian actor mostly known for his roles in Nollywood romantic dramas.
The historical epic from TriStar Pictures is being directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, according to information gathered by DNB Stories Africa. It is based on the historical events that took place in the former Kingdom of Dahomey which was located in modern-day Benin.
Dahomey was home to an all-female military unit known as the Dahomey Amazons. According to reports, the Dahomey Amazons most likely originated in the 1600s and existed until 1904.
