Burundi’s President Pierre Nkurunziza has died, wife recovering from COVID-19

Burundi’s outgoing President Pierre Nkurunziza has died after suffering a heart attack, the government said in a statement.

The 55-year-old passed away on Monday, two days after he was admitted to hospital after feeling sick.

Nkurunziza’s death comes just 10 days after his wife Denise Nkurunziza was flown to Nairobi for treatment of an ailment suspected to be coronavirus.

Denise is currently admitted at the Aga Khan Hospital, a private, not-for-profit medical institution in Nairobi, Kenya. A source from the hospital seeking anonymity told the media she was airlifted to Nairobi by Amref Health Africa.

President Nkurunzniza has ruled Burundi for 15 years (since 2005). He was re-elected to a third term in 2015 but announced in 2018 he would not seek re-election.
