Who is DJ Sbu?
DJ Sbu is a famous South African disc jockey, music producer, TV and radio host. He is also a businessman and the owner of the popular energy drink, MoFaya.
Aside from being a versatile artiste, DJ Sbu is also a philanthropist. He owns a foundation called SLEF, which is dedicated to fixing the youth culture in South Africa.
DJ Sbu’s early life and education
DJ Sbu, whose full name is Sbusiso Leope, was born on May 28, 1977. He is 44 years old as of April 2022. The South African entertainer was born in Tembisa, South Africa. He grew up there with his parents, Mothlegi Leope and Ntombizodwa Leope.
He began his early childhood education at Welamlambo Primary School, Tembisa. After that, he moved to Pretoria where he completed his high school education. DJ Sbu graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sound Engineering from the African Media University. He went further to study electrical engineering at the Technikon Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.
How DJ Sbu started his career
DJ Sbu started his career in the year 1998 as a broadcaster at Tembisa Info Radio. There, he was in charge of hosting weekend shows. However, Sbusiso only worked there for 18 months.
He started working with YFM (a Johannesburg radio station) in 2000. At YFM, he worked as a producer and co-host for a weekend show, “Beauty and the Beast” with Angela Ludek. Also in 2000, DJ Sbu produced his first movie titled “Hang Time”.
Following the success of his movie, he began to catch the attention of movie producers. He was ultimately cast in TV series like “Generations” (2000), “Isidingo” (2001) and “It Rained Last Night” (2001).
DJ Sbu also appeared in TV adverts like the Toyota Tazz and World Online in 2000. As a TV host, DJ Sbu hosted the Talent hunt show, “Gumbo Fire” which was shown on SABC 1. He also anchored more than 200 episodes of SABC’s game show, “Friends Like These”. The popular game show helped increase DJ Sbu’s popularity.
However, in 2015, he announced his exit from the game show, saying:
“It’s time I make way for others and move on to bigger challenges as a youth leader in Business and Community Projects through my Foundation SLEF”.

As a businessman, DJ Sbu co-owned TS Records. However, the label was shut down in 2017 after a rumoured disagreement between Sbusiso and co-owner, Thembinkosi. Currently, DJ Sbu is the sole owner of MoFaya, an energy drink.

DJ Sbu was formerly engaged to Disebo Makatsa – a graduate of Geoscience from the University of Pretoria. Makatsa was born in Welkom, Free State, South Africa. She is the mother of Sbusiso’s only daughter, Waratwa Leope.
The ex-lovers got engaged in 2013. In the year 2015, it was rumoured that they had separated on the basis of infidelity. Makatsa was actually accused of cheating on DJ Sbu with multimillionaire, Edwin Sodi.
However, she refuted the claims saying that no man or woman was the reason for their separation. She insisted that they “amicably” separated and still respect each other.

DJ Sbu and South African actress Terry Pheto briefly dated for a year. Unfortunately, the ex-lovers broke up in 2010.
