The city of Enugu has been thrown into mourning with the recent report of the passing of Samuel Okwaraji’s aged mother Janet.
Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji was an ex-international Nigerian footballer. Sam Okwaraji’s untimely death was well reported by the media in the 90s. He had collapsed and died in the 77th minute of a World Cup qualification match against Angola at the Lagos National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos State on 12 August 1989. Cause of death was ruled as congestive heart failure. He was just 25.
Sam Okwaraji’s mother Janet Okwaraji has reportedly been battling an unknown ailment since the death of her son. Her death was confirmed by her other son Patrick on Sunday, June 7 2020. Janet Okwaraji was aged 83 when she died.
ABN TV reports that Mrs Janet died at her Abakpa Nike Enugu home, after she recently complained of neglect on her family by the government.
Mrs Janet’s death is coming less than one month that the Federal Ministry of Sports and Youth development under Minister Sunday Dare extended a hand of generosity by sending food items and a cash gift of N50,000 to her.
Mother of late Rashidi Yekini Mrs Sikirat Yekini also got the same amount of money from the Ministry of Sports and she was placed on N10,000 monthly stipend. Rashidi Yekini is another Nigerian footballer whose death saddened many Nigerians.
There had been news that Samuel Okwaraji’s mother Janet has been down since the shocking death of her son 31 years year ago. It was gathered that she never really recovered from the shock.
