Defining Nigerian Alté music
Alté music, short for “alternative music”, is a non-traditional hybrid genre of music that is swiftly gaining popularity in Nigeria. Often a blend of Afrobeats and pop and sometimes rap, alté has been cited as going beyond simply a music genre but also about representation, expression and culture.
Popular Nigerian alté singers include Ogranya, BOJ, Fresh L, Odunsi, AYLO, WurlD, Lady Donli, Melvitto, Gabzy, Wavy The Creator, etc.
Who is BOJ?
BOJ is a popular Nigerian alté musician. His full name is Bolaji Odojukan (his surname is erroneously spelt as “Ojudokan” in some reports). He has been cited as one of the pioneers of the Nigerian alté music scene, having been in the industry for over a decade.
BOJ was born on April 22, 1994. He is 28 years old as of April 2022. He was born in the UK and raised both in England and Nigeria.
BOJ and DRB LasGidi
BOJ is a current member of the music group called DRB LasGidi which was formed in 2007 by three school friends: Tobi Ajayi (Tobias), Tobenna Ofili, and Ladi Lanre (FreshL).
BOJ (Bolaji Odojukan) and Teezee (Teniola Zaccheaus ) joined the group later. The group which has been around since way back in 2007, started to gain fresh popularity in the late 2010s, just as alté music started to gain recognition in Nigeria.
As of 2022, the three current members of DRB LasGidi are Fresh L (Ladi Ladenegan), TeeZee (Teniola Zacchaeus) and BOJ (Bolaji Odojukan). In 2019, the group released a single aptly titled “Alté”, effectively marking their position as leaders in the new genre.
BOJ has stated that while they remain as a group in DRB LasGidi, each member of the band is free to release individual projects.
