INEC chairman addresses reports of joining 2023 presidential race

The national chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has reacted to growing reports that he might be contesting the 2023 presidential seat.

Addressing the speculations, Professor Mahmood Yakubu denied the reports, stating that he has no interest in joining the 2023 presidential race.

A press statement released by Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, on Sunday, May 8, 2022 reads:

Our attention has been drawn to innuendoes in certain quarters that Nigerians should not be surprised if the INEC Chairman joins the Presidential race or urges him to do so. It is a preposterous proposition. It will not happen.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s reaction comes after the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) had on Saturday asked Nigerians not to be shocked if they see the Chairman of INEC purchasing a presidential ticket just like the case of CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele.
