While it appears Lagos Nollywood (if that’s the right term to use) gets better repute than movies from Asaba, the latter actually boasts of a larger industry and perhaps also a bigger market.
In addition, some Asaba movies arguably have better storylines than their Lagos counterparts. Lagos productions which are often targeted at the cinemas, ROK channels occasionally, and more recently Netflix have been criticized multiple times for only focusing on the glitz and glamour without paying due attention to the stories they churn out.
A good example is “Chief Daddy” by Ebony Productions with its ensemble cast of A-listers but with a completely insipid story.
Also, Asaba movies have contributed immensely to getting Nollywood to where it is today. Even some of the biggest actors and actresses we have in Nigeria today started in Asaba, including the likes of Genevieve Nnaji, Rita Dominic, Jim Iyke, Chioma Chukwuka, Ramsey Nouah, Uche Jombo, Stephanie Okereke, Ruth Kadiri, and many others.
