So you bumped into that extremely hot boy or girl at the mall and you feel your heart stop for a second.
Your stomach fill up with butterflies or whatever, and then you walk up to her or him and start playing nice and trying to talk.
And eventually you two exchanged numbers.
And you begin talking.
And talking and talking and talking…
And you finally decide to meet.
And you meet and meet and meet…
And then you finally decide to say it:
“I Love You!”
And (s)he replies: “I Love You Too!”
And you feel like the happiest person on earth.
Listen, I hate to break it to you, but what people call “love” is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed.
It hits hard, then it slowly fades, leaving you stranded in a failing marriage. I did it. Your parents are going to do it.
Your kids sadly too.
Love is just an emotion:
Biologically, all of your emotions are meant to serve a purpose. And once that purpose is done — whether successfully or not — the emotion goes away.
In short, love at first sight is translated by the thalamus as a “desired human chemical reaction”, an important message which is then sent to the amygdala (the core memory center), resulting in the flooding of your entire system with intoxicating hormones and mind-altering neurochemicals.
These whole processes are there to ensure you go after the mate, successfully carries through with the mating ritual (sex), and ensure the continuation of your own species.
It’s all natural, nothing extraordinary.
Under normal conditions, no single human emotion exists indefinitely.
Sadness, happiness, weakness, strength, LOVE, they all come and go!
When they linger more than they are naturally supposed to, it becomes a disorder.
Lingering sadness becomes depression, an ugly psychological disorder.
Lingering happiness becomes mania — equally terrible.
Lingering love becomes addiction!
Over time, humans, being the intelligent animals they are, have found ways to exploit the biological meaning of love.
They’ve commercialized it, cultured it, abused it…
What have they not done?
