American comedian and actress Kathy Griffin, who has never been shy about provoking people with her comedy, has sparked outrage after being photographed holding a mock “decapitated” head of US president, Donald Trump.
After the photo was shared, many responded with angry tweets, calling her “evil”, “dumb” and “attention-seeking.”
Even the U.S. Secret Service has responded to the drama, saying they are looking into the case.
Griffin called the photography an expression of art.
Griffin was seen in a YouTube video with photographer Tyler Shields making a joke that they’re going to have to run away to Mexico after the images go public.
She however didn’t explain much about the real motive for the photo.
“I won’t give away what we’re doing but Tyler and I are not afraid to do images that make noise,” she says in the video clip, in which she also praises Shields for making her look like she’s 15. (Griffin is 56.)
“But first I’m an artist. But it’s good lighting.”
The images were published by TMZ on Tuesday, ahead of the official release.
Griffin has tweeted that she does not condone violence and was merely “mocking the Mocker in Chief.”
But on Twitter, the blowback against her was immediate and excoriating.
Many people called for her head, demanded investigations, and asked CNN to sack her.
Griffin co-hosts the annual New Year’s Eve broadcast with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
