Zambian student arrested for “insulting the president on Facebook”

by Staff writer

Edward Makayi, an engineering student in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, was arrested days ago.

It is alleged that Mr Makayi used an expletive [curse word] while writing about the president on Facebook.

Appearing in court yesterday, Edward Makayi denied the charges leveled against him.

The court granted him bail but Makayi is still in custody until he meets the bail conditions, which includes a 2,000 kwacha ($220) cash payment.

Zambia’s president Edgar Lungu has been accused of being authoritarian by many of his critics.

South Africa’s Julius Malema has compared Lungu to apartheid leaders because of his style of repressing political opposition by accusing and detaining people.
