Roman Reigns is an American professional wrestler and former football player. He is currently signed to WWE, where he performs on the SmackDown brand under the ring name Roman Reigns. Reigns is also a member of the renowned Anoa’i family of Samoan wrestlers.
Roman Reigns’ real name is Leati Joseph “Joe” Anoa’i. He was born on May 25, 1985, in Pensacola, Florida, United States. He is 37 years old as of February 2023.

Roman Reigns played football for three years at Pensacola Catholic High School and one year at Escambia High School. In his senior year, he was named Defensive Player of the Year by the Pensacola News Journal. While in college, he joined the first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2006 and earned All-ACC first-team honours with 40 tackles, two recovered fumbles, and 4.5 sacks.
He was later signed by the Minnesota Vikings in May 2007. In 2008, he was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. Wearing the number 99, Reigns played for one season with the Eskimos, featuring in five games, of which he started three.
Roman Reigns: Wrestling career
In 2010, Roman Reigns signed a contract with WWE and was later assigned to their developmental territory Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW). He made his televised debut on August 19, 2010, using the ring name Roman Leakee, in a 15-man battle royal, which was won by Alex Riley.
In 2012, Roman Reigns made his WWE debut as a member of “The Shield” alongside Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins. The trio declared themselves “The Shield” and vowed to rally against injustice. The Shield eventually had differences between them and they parted ways after a feud between Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins in one of the tag team matches.
Following the disbandment, Reigns started as a solo performer in WWE and brought himself up for the WWE championship contention. In 2015, Roman Reigns entered the 2015 Royal Rumble match on January 25, winning the game after eliminating Rusev. The win earned him a WWE World Heavyweight Championship match at WrestleMania 31.
Roman Reigns: Leukaemia diagnosis
Still in 2015, Reigns was involved in a fatal four-way match involving names like Alberto Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler, and Kevin Owens. Eventually, he won the match and became the number-one contender for the WWE heavyweight title. A triple-threat match between Reigns, Strowman, and Lesnar for the Universal Championship was scheduled for the Crown Jewel event, however, on October 22, Reigns relinquished the title and announced that his leukaemia had returned after 11 years of privately battling it and being in remission.
Following this announcement, Roman Reigns went on an indefinite hiatus to receive treatment. He was first diagnosed in May 2007 when he was signed to the Minnesota Vikings and went into remission around two years after the initial treatment. In February 2019, Reigns made his return to Raw, revealing that his leukaemia was once again in remission. Later in the night, Reigns and Rollins appeared to assist Ambrose to tackle an attack by Drew McIntyre, Bobby Lashley, Elias, and Baron Corbin.
