On February 6, 2024, Jacqueline Marleni Perez was arrested and charged with a count of child abandonment, a Class E Felony in New York.
A few hours before the local police arrested Perez, she left her newborn baby girl in the entryway of an apartment on 32 Chestnut Street, Yonkers, New York. Luckily, a passerby found the infant at about 8:30 pm and alerted the police. The child was then taken to a hospital where she received medical attention. According to reports, Perez’s baby is stable and is in the custody of Child Protective Services.
After carefully looking through hours of surveillance camera footage and interviewing witnesses, the police identified Perez as the child’s mother.
How it all started
Jacqueline Marleni Perez reportedly gave birth to her baby without medical assistance on February 6, 2024, at about 3:30 pm. She then dressed the child in a T-shirt, covered her with a blanket, and left her by the hallway of an apartment at about 7:30 pm. First responders to the scene found the child with her umbilical cord attached and alerted the local police.
Mike Spano, the Mayor of Yonkers where the sad incident occurred, commented on the situation.

“The circumstances that occurred are heartbreaking and unfortunate, but we are thankful the baby is stable and safe. I commend the compassionate and swift actions of our Yonkers PD in finding the mother, exhibiting concern for her welfare after going through a traumatic and desperate ordeal.”
Jacqueline was arraigned in Yonkers Criminal Court on February 8, 2023, and later released without bail. The Westchester County District Attorney’s Office is currently handling the case. However, no update has been released to the public as of the time of writing.
