5 animals you really should be afraid of

by Staff writer

While encountering a lion may look like the most terrifying thing on earth, these 5 animals have killed more people than a lion ever will.

1. Mosquitoes

The World Health Organisation estimates that 725,000 people are killed each year by mosquito-born diseases. A staggering 200 million people are at least temporarily incapacitated by malaria alone, of which 600,000 die.

Dengue fever, yellow fever and encephalitis are also deadly diseases carried by mosquitoes.

2. Snakes

From cobras to vipers to pythons, anything that says “snake” should flood you with shivers.

3. Man

Who better to fear than we do ourselves? More people has been killed by fellow people than any other mammal on the planet!

So next time you try to feel safe around this creature remember that this is the only category of animal that designs tools specifically for killing, and even make movies just to show off his killing talents.

4. Dogs

Man’s best friend is also another mammal very likely to kill him. Over 90 percent of rabies infections in humans worldwide are caused by dog bites, though that number is much lower in the west where rabies has been well contained in canine populations and skunks and bats are more likely than dogs to infect people.

5. Tsetse flies

They resemble house flies, but they are clearly deadlier. This is one insect that has rendered whole areas in Africa uninhabitable because of their effects on people and livestock. There is currently no vaccine or medication that protects against sleeping sickness, the disease that this fly causes.
