Jodie Foster’s experience with John Hinckley Jr

During her first year at Yale, Jodie Foster was stalked by a man called John Hinckley Jr. Hinckley developed an obsessive fixation on Jodie Foster after seeing the 1976 film, “Taxi Driver”, in which a man plots to assassinate a presidential candidate. In the film, Jodie Foster portrays “Iris Steensma”, a sexually trafficked twelve-year-old.

When Jodie Foster got into Yale, Hinckley moved to New Haven, Connecticut for a short time to stalk her. He sent Jodie Foster several love letters and romantic poems and repeatedly called her and left her messages. After he failed to establish any form of meaningful communication with her, John Hinckley Jr. fantasized about hijacking an aircraft or killing himself in a bid to get Foster’s attention.

John Hinckley Jr. then and now.

Eventually, Hinckley decided to impress Jodie Foster by assassinating the President, thinking that when he’d done that, he would appeal to Jodie Foster as an equal. So, Hinckley followed President Jimmy Carter from state to state and was then arrested in Tennessee on a firearm charge. He received psychiatric treatment for his depression but his mental health did not improve. He then began to target President Ronald Reagan in 1981. He collected information on the assassination of John F. Kennedy as a guide. Hinckley wrote a note to Jodie Foster before his attempt to murder Reagan.

The note read:

“Over the past seven months, I’ve left you dozens of poems, letters and love messages in the faint hope that you could develop an interest in me. Although we’ve talked on the phone a couple of times, I never had the courage to approach you and introduce myself. The reason I’m going ahead with this attempt now is because I cannot wait any longer to impress you.”

On March 30, 1981, John Hinckley Jr. shot at President Ronald Reagan six times as he left the Hilton Hotel in Washington D. C. In the process, Hinckley wounded police officer, Thomas Delahanty and Secret Service agent, Timothy McCarthy and critically wounded and permanently disabled press secretary, James Brady. Brady passed away in 2014 due to complications from the gunshot wounds. After his trial, John Hinckley Jr. declared that the shooting was the greatest love offering in the world.

The incident drew so much media attention that Foster was accompanied by bodyguards for months. In 1982, Jodie Foster published an essay titled, “Why Me?”. Foster has stated that she does not like to dwell on the incident and she does not want to be known for that. She added that her suffering compared to James Brady’s was insignificant.

She said:

“Whatever bad moments that I had certainly could never compare to that family.”

During her time at Yale, Jodie Foster had other stalkers, including a man who planned to kill her but changed his mind after seeing her perform in a school play.
