How Leiomy Maldonado started her career
Leiomy Maldonado started her dancing career at the age of 16 after she was introduced to voguing at the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club in the Bronx. According to her, a mentor had given her a VHS tape to watch and she instantly fell in love with voguing after watching the tape. She got into the limelight in the 2000s after inventing a new energetic and dramatic style of voguing.
In 2009, Leiomy Maldonado became the first-ever openly transgender woman to appear on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew (fourth instalment). She was a member of the dance troupe “Vogue Evolution” on the show. Her group made it to the top 5. Her signature hair-flip move called “The Leiomy Lolly” during the show is reported to have been adopted by American celebrity singers like Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Britney Spears in their choreography routines.
Leiomy Maldonado also appeared in Willow Smith’s “Whip My Hair” music video, where she did her signature hair moves. Leiomy Maldonado is credited as one of the choreographers for the ballroom scenes in the TV series “Pose”. She also played the role of “Florida Ferocity” in the series. In 2020, she was named one of the judges on the HBO Max show “Legendary” (a dance competition inspired by the ballroom culture), alongside Megan Thee Stallion, Jameela Jamil, and Law Roach.
