A Somali regional minister Abdulkadir Abukar Karani was killed by gunmen yesterday, August 17, 2020.
Abdulkadir was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the town of Jowhar, Middle Shabelle region on Monday evening, police said.
A police official in Jowhar town named Abdifatah Hassan told the Turkish news organization Anadolu Agency over the phone that Hirshabelle State Agriculture Minister Abdulkadir Abukar was shot dead minutes after the evening prayer.
“The gunmen attacked minister Abdulkadir Abukar while he was going to his house from a nearby mosque,” Hassan said, adding that the attackers fled the scene immediately after.
He said security forces rushed to the area and started an investigation into the incident.
Jowhar, is the administrative capital of Hirshabelle State located 90 kilometres (55 miles) north of the capital Mogadishu.
The Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack. Al-Shabaab has in the past two years killed MPs and security officials in separate attacks on Bal’ad-Jowhar road, Somali.
