Professor James Nwoye Adichie, the father of acclaimed Nigerian writer Chimamanda Adichie is dead.
Professor Adichie is a retired professor of Statistics and Mathematics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). He died Wednesday night at Chira Memorial Hospital, Awkuzu in the Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to his son, Okey Adichie who spoke to reporters on Thursday, Professor Adichie, aged 88, died after a brief illness.
“Our father, Professor J. N. Adichie, Odelora Abba, died late yesterday night, June 10, 2020, at Chira Memorial Hospital, Awkuzu,” he said.
Professor James Nwoye Adichie was born in 1932 and went to Nimo Primary School and later moved to Akwuzu Primary School where he finished his Standard 6.
After his primary education, he attended Our Lady’s High School, Onitsha, 1947 – 48, and Yaba Technical Institute (now College of Technology) Lagos, 1948 – 50. He also attended the University College, Ibadan, between 1957 to 1960, and the University of California, Berkeley, USA (1963-66).
He has been lecturing in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka since the 60s and was appointed a professor in 1976. He retired in 1997.
