Nigeria’s Daily Independent Newspaper has retracted its earlier publication reporting that Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantami was on the Terror Watch List of America due to his association with Boko Haram.
The newspaper had in a statement released Tuesday, April 13, said the publication titled “As America Places Nigerian Minister On Watchlist” has not been verified to be true and apologized to both Dr Pantami and their audience.
Dr Isa Pantami had earlier threatened to sue the publishers of the Daily Independent if they did not retract the story and apologize publicly to him.
The statement from the Daily Independent reads:
RETRACTION RE: Disquiet As America Places Nigerian Minister On Watchlist
Our attention has been drawn to the story with the above title, published in the Sunday Independent newspaper of April 11, 2021. We have since realized that the information contained in the story has not been verified to be true.
The Minister mentioned in the story, Alhaji Isa Ali Ibrahim, also known as Sheikh Pantami, is not known to be on American Terror Watch List, nor is he linked to terror organisations. We regret and sincerely apologise for the embarrassment our story has caused the Honourable Minister whom we hold in high regard.
